A cold storage dehumidifier by AFIM® Dehumidifying was the solution of choice for the Spar Distributions Centre in Waalwijk.

Function of the Spar cold storage dehumidifier

Cold storage dehumidifying: In order to limit the energy loss caused by evaporators having to be defrosted, the Spar chain of supermarkets chose to have an dehumidifier installed in the freezer room at its new centre of distributions in Waalwijk. The delivery and installation of the AFIM® Dehumidifying was all handled by the company Air In Motion. The combination of the dryer’s unique features and the high-pressure air curtains (AFIM® Air Doors; see www.afim-airdoor.com for more information) not only prevents condensation and ice formation, but also considerably reduces energy consumption.

Advantages of the Spar Distributions dehumidifier

Cold storage dehumidifying: The advantage of a cold storage dehumidifier is that it allows for the door to remain open and thus enables easy transport. Because of the sheer amount of transport taking place, it is often not possible to lock the door. By using an dehumidifier in the cold store, the evaporators are relieved of a part of their burden and snow, mist and ice formation around the entryway is prevented. Furthermore, the AFIM® Air Doors maintain the temperature in the room despite the fact that the door is kept open for transport. This strongly reduces the number of times the evaporators have to be defrosted, which not only brings practical benefits but also considerably brings down energy consumption.

About Spar Distributions in Waalwijk

In 2011, Spar Holding built a new centre of distributions in the Harbour industrial zone, on land next to Harbour Seven that used to belong to the Swanenberg Iron Group. Apart from building the 23,000 m2 distributions complex with freezer rooms, Spar also moved its headquarters to Waalwijk. The entire complex was built by the construction company Aan de Twegge from Twello. All in all, the project came at a price of around 25 million euros. The previous distributions centre in the Moerdijk municipality (Zevenbergen) was too small, leading to operational inefficiencies.

The backbone of the Dutch Spar branch is formed by autonomous Spar and Attent retailers. All of the approximately 600 stores are supplied from two centres of distribution, namely the Northern centre in Alkmaar and the Southern centre in Waalwijk. Spar Holding is a perfect fit for Harbour Seven, which is increasingly shifting its focus to the logistics sector.

Together, the Spar Holding headquarters and cold storage complex employ around 300 people. Spar Holding moved into the new buildings in June 2011.
